PEOPLES CLIMATE MARCH – RUPANDEHI

Climate Change is one of the burning global agenda in the modern day world. The scientific community of the world unanimously has come to the consensus that climate change is a reality and is directly attributed to anthropogenic activity. Though the effect of climate change is not limited to any political or geographical boundary, the cause of climate change however is linked with the emissions of greenhouse gasses in the name of economic development.

In order to address climate change, global leaders were gathered in Paris for the 21st Conference of Parties (COP 21) in 30th November, 2015 to 11th December, 2015 with a comprehensive document. The representatives from Government of Nepal, various NGOs and civil society took part in that conference to put forward various national issues regarding climate change.

To show the government of the various nations that the general people are keeping a vigilant eye on them, People’s Climate March was being organized in various parts of the world as well as in Nepal on 28th November, 2015 and same was being organized at Rupandehi district also. In tandem to global march, youths of Nepal too organized  People’s Climate March – Nepal with the core theme of Climate Justice. In order to familiarize youths of Nepal with Climate Justice, the working group of People’s Climate Mobilization Team requested all the people to support and join the campaign to get participated in Global March.

After  attending the 2 days ( November 18 –November 19, 2015)  program “ Nepal Climate Convergence’’  at Sap Falcha Thapathali, Kathmandu organized by Digo Bikas Institute in association with NYCA , we got chance to be acquainted with the International climate policies , climate justice n climate campaigns in context to Nepal. We prepared ground action for our representative area and we were back to our place.

We 9 students studying at IAAS, Paklihawa, Rupandehi organized 3 different events : Aastha Subedi and Bishnu Gautam as  coordinators to pressurize the global leaders for climate justice. Firstly we organized an ‘Art-Workshop’ on 26th Nov, 2015 for school and Bachelor level having theme as :

  • Climate Change
  • Carbon emission reduction
  • Climate justice
  • COP21
  • Global Warming

Students from 10 schools and from IAAS, paklihawa Campus were participated and winners were also rewarded. Secondly we organized ‘Movie- Screening’ on 27th  Nov 2015 , in IAAS, paklihawa Campus. We had shown ‘Climate Disruption’ and ‘Economics of happiness’ and we were able to gather almost 100 students in that event. We were able to provide some information regarding negotiations among different countries on climate change, how localization and globalization affect on climate change and living standard of people.

And lastly we organised ‘Peoples Climate March- Rupandehi’ in November 28, 2015 from Traffic Chowk to Chauraha Chowk in  Butwal from 12 noon to 2 pm. We made march with different slogons like ‘पग्लदो पर्बत भविष्यको संकट’ , ‘अहिले नगरे कहिले???’ ‘ Save Earth’Go-Green’. In that march we were expecting many people to raise their voice for climate justice , unfortunately  because of their busyness in their colorful life we were unable to gather as much as we expect. But we successfully ended up our event with the involvement of people and their voices.DSC_1850

This was our little effort towards our earth and we just hope this effort could bring a big change.

BEE FARMING : FASCINATING AND PRAISEWORTHY BUSINESS

Working on land with plants animals and instruments is fun loving work and feeding the whole world just furnish the great satisfaction. In contrast, in this busy time we can not run farms at the same time but in leisure time obviously we can be gardeners and bee keepers and can satisfy our needs.

Bee keeping / farming is an art of managing bees with the intention of producing honey. Bee families are called colonies and each colony comprises of three kinds of individuals : queen, workers, and drones. There is normally only one queen in a colony and her presence is necessary as only the queen lays eggs. Drones (males) helps in fertilization and maintaining the heat necessary for hatching of broods. Workers perform the tasks of construction, maintenance of comb and jobs of feeding, guard the hive, clean it.

Honey is an excellent food,  a good remedy , the best of all sweetners to maintain, nourish, and restore health. It acts as a good medicine too in case of coughs, bronchitis, ulcers, burns, skin inflammation, stomachache etc. It can be used in skin care, digestion of food and for insomnia. And yes honey can be stored for years and years as it is the only food that can not spoil or rot.

Besides honey production, bee keeping can increased crop yield. Bees fertilize the flowers of the fruit trees so it contributes in fruit production too. We can take this as an example of positive externality too.

Now a days, ithas become the most popular and fascinating way of  growing up agriculture and means to get employment. Consequently it rests both mind and body. One of the example of this type of bee farming is now practicing in Bijuwar-6, Pyuthan district by Ram Chandra Subedi. He is a middle class farmer whose main source of income is fully relying on agriculture. He had practiced lots of  ideas in his occupation as he used to have Tractor for ploughing others fields  for which he was paid,  practicing organic farming, livestock rearing. And now on, he is engaged in bee farming.  It was started 3 months ago but now it has become as commercial one. Bee hives are kept in different places for certain period of time and in 20-25 days it is ready to harvest. In one harvest he had collected around 4 quintals of honey which is pure and fine from 80 hives. He had been selling Rs.450/kg of honey. Own land , own family member’s helping hands  and no any extra cost has lead him to earn more profit than he was expecting. Some constraints like low temperature during winter engendered difficulty in extraction of honey, unavailability of nectars flowers has been faced by him but he has not been in loss.

With minimum land, investment and time, a bee keeper can reap many rewards. S/he can increased their field productivity, produce delicious and yummy honey, can enjoy their leisure time and obviously the possible economic return too.

So just start the bee farming , remind everyone the necessity of work, the act of unity, beauty of passionate love, the prosperity of countless families just like of bees. So make some commitment to your purpose, give people some nourishing food, stay healthy and happy.
